Many deals have surprised NHL fans this trade season and Jakob Chychrun's move from the Arizona Coyotes to the Ottawa Senators is among the latest to stun fans across the league.

After the trade was announced on Feb. 1, NHL Twitter reacted strongly to the news. Some fans thought the deal was illogical, while others were happy to see Chychrun finally make a move after several years of constant trade rumors.

There was a funny take, too, as one fan said they were glad the "20 years" of Jakob Chychrun trade rumors were finally over.

The Arizona Coyotes and the Ottawa Senators reached an agreement over 24-year-old star defenceman Jakob Chychrun. The deal includes a 2023 conditional first-round pick, a 2024 conditional second-round pick and a 2026 second-round pick.

The condition of the trade is that if the Senators fail to make the playoffs and score a top-five in the upcoming draft, the pick becomes an unprotected 2024 first-round pick.

The 24-year-old started his NHL journey with the Arizona Coyotes while debuting for them in the 2016-17 season. Chychrun has played 373 games, averaging 21 minutes on the ice, scoring 60 goals and assisting 110 more.

In the current season, he has played 36 games and has averaged over 23 minutes on the ice. Despite being a defensive player, Chychrun has 28 goal contributions and is sixth on the team's goalscoring list.

Chychrun is likely to earn around $4 million over the next two seasons, making the trade a win-win situation for the player and the franchise.

The Ottawa Senators have had a decent season so far as they are placed sixth in the Eastern Conference Atlantic Division with 64 points and are in the mix for the playoffs. The Senators have done well on offense, scoring close to 190 goals this season with contributions from Brady Tkachuk and Tim Stutzle.

Though their defense has conceded goals at a rate of over three per game this season, there has been inconsistency in the setup. The signing of Chychrun will add strength to the defense due to his work rate.

The move could benefit the Senators in their quest for playoff qualification as they look for maximum points in the upcoming games. The Senators are scheduled to play the New York Rangers on Thursday.
