Top golfer Scottie Scheffler arrested amidst fatal accident at PGA Championship venue
On Friday morning, No. 1 golfer Scottie Scheffler was arrested by Louisville Metro Police while trying to drive into Valhalla Golf Club, the PGA Championship venue.
Traffic was halted due to a fatal accident involving a shuttle bus and a pedestrian around 5 a.m. ET and Scottie Scheffler seemed in a hurry. Per ESPN's Jeff Darlington, Scheffler ignored an officer's stop command and drove toward the entrance. An officer then attached himself to Scheffler's car.
Scheffler faced multiple charges, including second-degree assault of a police officer and reckless driving. He was released without bail and arrived at the course shortly before his 10:08 a.m. tee time.
Scheffler's attorney, Steven Romines, said Scheffler was unaware of the accident and followed prior entry instructions.
"He was going into Valhalla to work out," Romines said. "He was getting ready for his tee time. They were directing traffic. He held his credential out and was going in like they'd been instructed to. Apparently, there had been a traffic accident, maybe even a fatality, down the road, and that had changed the traffic patterns, and he was unaware of that."
The PGA expressed condolences to the victim's family.
"This morning we were devastated to learn that a worker with one of our vendors was tragically struck and killed by a shuttle bus outside Valhalla Golf Club," the PGA of America's statement.
Scheffler, who recently won the Masters, is set to cooperate with authorities.
