Mitch Marner, currently under a six-year, $65.4 million contract, assisted in two crucial goals for the Toronto Maple Leafs in their 4-3 win over the New Jersey Devils on Thursday.
He helped Auston Matthews with the game-tying third before assisting William Nylander for the overtime winner. His first assist made him the fastest Maple Leaf in history to achieve 700 points in a career.
His teammate Auston Matthews took to Instagram to celebrate Marner reaching 700 points. He gave a one-word reaction, writing 'bang' along with two emojis that showed his elation.
Matthews' assist was off a dump off through the side of the rink that was buried by the Leafs captain. His 701st point was even cleverer, helping Nylander get on a breakaway with a cross-ice pass.
Matthews' two goals got him to 683 career points and he is expected to follow Marner soon to the 700 mark. For now, he appreciates his teammate for the big plays he is able to churn up when Toronto most need it.
"Yeah, it was great," Matthews said about Marner. "I thought it was a competitive game. There wasn't a lot of space. They really had to, you know, work for everything that we got. And that's what he does. You know, he makes big time plays when we need him. And he definitely did that tonight."
Mitch Marner makes his feelings known after achieving 700 career points
The 27-year-old is leading his team with 62 points over 46 games which includes his 48 assists. Mitch Marner credited his teammates over the last nine seasons for his achievements.
"Yeah, it's a cool milestone. Obviously, it doesn't happen without a lot of support around you through the nine years that I've been here. So very fortunate. There's some really great players and some guys that have made it easy for me to do my job. So thankful for the guys that are around me and nothing's really done by yourself," Marner said.
It took Marner 622 games to achieve the feat, surpassing Leafs veterans Darryl Sittler and Matt Sundin on the all-time fastest to 700-point list. With the win, the Leafs moved to 58 points in the season and are currently top of the Atlantic Divison.
