Toronto Maple Leafs captain Auston Matthews shared his thoughts on William Nylander's breakaway skills after the team's 5-3 win over the Tampa Bay Lightning.
Nylander, who played on the fourth line during the game, made a significant impact by scoring on a breakaway, giving the Leafs a 2-0 lead midway through the second period.
Matthews praised Nylander's ability to create offensive opportunities. He noted that Nylander has a unique talent for reading plays and positioning himself effectively to capitalize on scoring chances.
"He's really good at, like, cheating for offense. Like, I mean that in the best way possible like he reads the plays, and he's obviously very fast. And yeah, IQ I mean but the way he just reads the play and is able to get behind you. Yeah. Yeah, I mean, nobody does it better than him," said Matthews after the game.
William Nylander, who's inked to an eight-year, $92 million contract, has racked up 49 points through 28 goals and 21 assists, including six game-winning goals in 47 games for the Leafs this season. He's on pace for 47 goals.
Auston Matthews stays hot as the Leafs win their third consecutive game
Auston Matthews remained hot for the Leafs in the 5-3 win over the Lightning. The captain scored for the fourth straight game and also provided an assist for the Leafs, who won their third straight game.
Auston Matthews has now scored eight goals in nine games since returning from an upper-body injury. He has accumulated 37 points through 19 goals and 18 assists in 33 games.
"It’s been feeling better each night,” Matthews said after the game. “Just getting back in a rhythm and playing every night, I think that kind of helps settle back into the season after the time off, but I think the way our line has been playing, just hounding pucks, trying to attack offensively and being good in our own zone has been good and we just want to keep that momentum going."
With their third consecutive win, the Toronto Maple Leafs improved their record to 30-16-2, atop the Atlantic Division standings. They'll host the Columbus Blue Jackets at Scotiabank Arena next on Wednesday. The puck drops at 7:30 p.m. ET.
