Star forward Auston Matthews shared his thoughts after scoring an overtime winner in the Toronto Maple Leafs' 2-1 victory over the New Jersey Devils on Tuesday night. The win improves the Leafs' record to 17-9-2 on the season.
Despite being outshot 38-14, Toronto found a way to come out on top against the Devils on the road. Matthews said about his game-winning goal:
"Yeah, that felt really good. Couldn't quite seem to find my spot there a couple times, but just tried to stick with it. .... He's a big guy, takes up a lot of the net, so I was kinda guessing he was gonna go down and just try to lift it."
Ondrej Palat scored for the Devils, while Pontus Holmberg did so in regulation for the Leafs. Despite heavily outshooting Toronto, the Devils couldn't find a way to beat Leafs goalie Anthony Stolarz besides Palat's second period goal.
Stolarz made 37 saves in the winning effort for Toronto, while Jacob Markstrom made 15 saves in the loss. The Maple Leafs next play the Anaheim Ducks on Thursday night at home.
Maple Leafs HC Craig Berube comments after overtime win against the Devils
Maple Leafs coach Craig Berube said that goalie Stolarz was the biggest factor in grabbing two points despite being comprehensively outshot.
"Our goalie kept us in it, so it was only 1-0. For sure, it is a big part of it.In the third period, we started to play better and more aggressive. We controlled the play a little bit more. In the first two periods, they had the puck. We didn’t get it from them." Berube said post-game.
When asked about the flat start, Berube said that he didn't really have an explanation. He said that over an 82-game season, you're going to have some off nights and that it was one of them.
“A lot of shots by them, but I thought we defended the interior well overall," he said. "The third period was better. We went to work, started to do some things, and controlled the play more. It is one of those games. I am not really going to read into it too much. I am not going to talk about it too much.”
Berube stressed that getting the win was all that mattered. It was the Maple Leafs' ninth consecutive road victory against the Devils.
