The Columbus Blue Jackets traded defenseman David Jiricek to the Minnesota Wild on Saturday in exchange for four draft picks, despite interest from multiple teams, according to Blue Jackets GM Don Waddell.
Waddell revealed that Minnesota had been pursuing Jiricek, the 6th overall pick in the 2022 NHL Draft, since "Day 1."
"A couple more teams stepped up and made things interesting. Minnesota has been hot since Day 1," Waddell said. "I was in constant contact with them, and Billy (Minnesota GM Guerin) is a friend of mine. But he understands that I’ve got to do what’s best for the Blue Jackets."
Guerin repeatedly checked in with Waddell to gauge Columbus' plans for Jiricek. After improving the draft pick compensation a couple of times, Waddell finally told Guerin the offer was fair.
In return for Jiricek, the Blue Jackets received a 1st round pick in 2025, two picks in 2026 (3rd and 4th round), and a 2nd round pick in 2027. Minnesota also got a 5th rounder in 2025 from Columbus.
The 21-year-old Jiricek had appeared in six games for the Blue Jackets this season, collecting 1 assist. He was sent to the AHL on November 20 after being a frequent healthy scratch. In 4 AHL games, he recorded 3 points.
Last season as a rookie, Jiricek played 43 games for Columbus, tallying one goal and nine assists. He finished with 11 points in 53 games across two brief NHL seasons.
Minnesota GM Bill Guerin on acquiring David Jiricek
Minnesota Wild general manager Bill Guerin believes acquiring David Jiricek was worth giving up a first-rounder as he stated:
"To me, this was a no-brainer to give up a first-round pick. I mean, he is first-round pick, and a very high one. I just don't see us drafting in that position -- hopefully we're not for some time to come. So to me, it was worth it." (as per NHL.com)
The GM is very high on the 21-year-old Jiricek and what he brings to the table.
"I think there's a lot to like; 6-4, right-shot D, high draft pick, played at a high level his whole life. Excelled at the American League level as an 18-19-year old, has played NHL games, I think maybe just needed a change."
Guerin sees David Jiricek as a big addition to the Wild's defensive corps for now and in the future.
