In a recent quarterfinal matchup at the World Juniors, Team Canada faced a significant setback when forward Cole Beaudoin was ejected from the game for kneeing Czechia forward Petr Sykora.
The incident occurred just over ten minutes into the first period, and Beaudoin received a major penalty and a game misconduct. The penalty call sparked discussions among analysts and fans alike.
TSN hockey broadcaster Bob McKenzie expressed his disagreement with the decision, stating that he believes the hit did not warrant a major penalty, and he even questioned whether it should have been penalized at all.
"Not only do I not think it was a major, I'm not even sure it was a penalty. I mean, if you watch the one angle from up high on the play by play, he gets spun around and goes down, and he's holding his knee holding the back of his hamstring, actually, but on that play right there that is a center pass hit right through the chest. His left knee was between Sykora's legs," McKenzie said.
"His right knee was on the outside of his leg. Watch the knee in the middle goes right through, and it's thigh on thigh, chest, right through the body. That, to me, is a really good hit. It should have been, at worst, a two minute minor. And the worst part of it, too, is, aside from being a five minute major, is you lose Beaudoin," he added.
Shortly after Cole Beaudoin's game misconduct, Team Canada fought back into the game, with Tanner Howe scoring to tie it 1-1 at 10:17. However, at 12:45, Jakub Stancl regained the lead for Czechia, making it 2-1.
Czechia eliminates Canada at World Juniors
With less than a minute left in the second period, Czechia took a solid 3-1 lead over Team Canada.
However, the home team showcased a remarkable comeback in the final period, as goals from Porter Martone and Bradly Nadeau brought the score to a tie at 3-3. Despite their efforts, a late goal from Adam Jecho sealed a 4-3 victory for Czechia and eliminated Canada from the World Juniors.
This defeat marked a historic moment for Canada, as they have now been eliminated in the quarterfinals in consecutive years for the first time in the federation's history, both times at the hands of Czechia.
Czechia will now face the United States in the semifinal of the World Juniors.
