With tomorrow's NHL Trade Deadline rapidly approaching, however, the Boston Bruins have been added to their roster this morning. NHL insider Elliotte Friedman reported this morning that the Bruins have acquired gritty forward Tyler Bertuzzi from the Detroit Red Wings, bolstering the first-place Bruins' depth heading into the playoffs.
"Boston it is for Bertuzzi" - Elliotte Friedman
While rumors have surrounded Bertuzzi all season, the move to the Bruins may have been the best-case scenario for the 28-year-old forward. In return, the Detroit Red Wings will receive a protected first-round pick in the 2024 NHL Entry Draft and a fourth-round pick in the 2025 NHL Entry Draft. Detroit will also retain 50% of Bertuzzi's salary as part of the deal.
The move may have come as a surprise as the Red Wings are in the hunt for a playoff spot, however, the team elected to move on from the pending unrestricted free agent.
Bertuzzi's gritty style should fit perfectly with the Boston Bruins, and will likely make him a fan favorite in a matter of minutes. Despite Bertuzzi's struggles this season, the team will hope he can regain his form from last season, which saw him post 30 goals and 32 assists in 68 games.
"Tyler Bertuzzi, acquired by BOS, is a playmaking winger. Scored a lot of goals last season but he's a passer first and foremost. #NHLBruins" - @JFreshHockey
In 29 games this season, Bertuzzi has four goals and 14 points. Last season, he set career highs with 30 goals and 62 points. He should benefit from the transition to the Boston Bruins as he will be surrounded by a stronger supporting cast, which should drastically improve his counting stats.

The move is the second major move for the Boston Bruins in the past week
Tyler Bertuzzi's acquisition comes nearly a week after Boston Bruins GM Don Sweeney landed Dmitry Orlov and Garnet Hathaway from the Washington Capitals. Landing Orlov has already paid off for the Bruins as the veteran defenseman has recorded five points in his first three games with the league leaders.

While several contenders in the Eastern Conference have been making deadline deals, including the Toronto Maple Leafs and Carolina Hurricanes, the Bruins are pulling away from the pack with an impressive 47-8-5 record. The acquisition of Bertuzzi, Orlov, and Hathaway will only help their bid for a deep playoff run.
