On Friday, the Boston Bruins made the 25th pick of the NHL Draft, selecting Dean Letourneau, a 6'7" forward who has generated quite a buzz. The pick marked a rare first-round appearance for Boston, who have only made four first-round selections in the past seven years. After re-acquiring their pick, however, Boston took a swing on Letourneau.

The pick was the only one made by Boston in the first round, however, the team will also make selections in the fourth, fifth and sixth rounds. Letourneau played a 56-game season with St. Andrews College last year with 61 goals and 66 assists.

While those numbers have turned heads, NHL analysts and scouts have raised concerns about the level of competition he's faced with St. Andrew's College. Despite that, the flashes of brilliance he's shown have impressed the Boston Bruins organization.

Given his skills for his size, the team seems optimistic about Letourneau's development. In addition to his massive frame for the center position, he also notably moves well for a player of his size, according to his former St. Andrew's coach.

Whereas Bruins fans have seen Zdeno Chara play the role of the hulking enforcer, Letourneau has shown grace and agility that, frankly, many other players of his size haven't. As St. Andrew's coach David Manning stated in an NHL.com interview:

“He moves really well for a big guy. His skating and his agility and his explosiveness are all very different for a bigger guy like him. … I think he’s going to shock a lot of people with his athleticism. He’s not your typical big, lanky guy."

Looking at the remaining picks the Boston Bruins have throughout the draft and potential selections

In addition to their first-round selection of Dean Letourneau, the Boston Bruins will have three more picks in the 2024 NHL Draft. The team will next make the 122nd overall pick, which will fall in the fourth round, and the 154th overall pick, which will fall in the fifth round.

Last, but certainly not least, the team will make the 186th overall pick, which will fall in the sixth round. Heading into the draft, it was no secret that the team needed a center. With Letourneau now added to their roster, the team will look to address various other needs.

Namely, the team will look to add to their wingers through free agency. However, we could see them look to plan for the future by drafting a winger. At the same time, there's plenty of reason to believe they could also bolster their defensive lines.

Given that Derek Forbort and Matt Grzelcyk are both set to be unrestricted free agents, acquiring a young defenseman to add depth to their lines could be in the works.

With draft action set to resume at 11:30 AM Eastern (8:30 AM Pacific), it will be interesting to see how things play out for the Boston Bruins.
