Boston Bruins unveil 3500-pound bronze Centennial Legacy Monument for 100-year anniversary celebration

The Boston Bruins unveiled a new 3,500-pound bronze statue outside TD Garden on Saturday to commemorate the franchise's 100th anniversary.

The statue, depicting a bear, which is the club's oldest brand symbol, was revealed on the eve of the 100th anniversary of the Bruins' first NHL game on Dec. 1, 1924.

The monument, titled the "Centennial Legacy Monument," pays tribute to 100 years of Bruins hockey in Boston and honors fans from the past as well as present.

The statue measures six feet in height and 10 feet in length and is made of bronze, with 90 pieces welded together and fixed on a 28-inch high base.

"Today, as we unveil this new Bear statue in celebration of the Boston Bruins’ first 100 years, we mark not just a milestone in our team’s history, but a symbol of the enduring spirit of this franchise and its fans," said Bruins CEO Charlie Jacobs at the unveiling ceremony.

"We are proud that this statue will greet generations of hockey fans, players and all who pass by, reminding them of the rich legacy we have built together and the exciting future that lies ahead."

The statue is placed outside TD Garden in Portal Park.

Bruins CEO Jacobs thanked Mayor Michelle Wu, Governor Maura Healey, the Massachusetts Department of Transportation and the Department of Conservation and Recreation for making it possible to find the perfect place for the Centennial Legacy Monument.

He also thanked Harry Weber for creating the beautiful bronze bear, which is now a perfect addition to the 100 years of Bruins pride and tradition. Weber had also created the Bobby Orr statue in 2010, which is outside TD Garden.

Message written on the monument to the Boston Bruins community

The unveiled monument to the Boston Bruins community features an inscription that encapsulates the team's century-long bond with the city and its people.

Etched onto the statue's base are words that speak about the Bruins' storied history and the many memories made over generations of fans:

"Together, with the community and the values we have held in our hearts for 100 years, the Boston Bruins embark on the next century. May our past inspire future generations of hockey heroes and fans to pave the way for new memories. Here, all are welcome to share their love of the game."

On the side of the base, it's written:

"Since 1924, the Boston Bruins have been woven into the fabric of our city with the same grit, passion and heart as our hometown. One hundred years of unforgettable moments shared together will be remembered and cherished for centuries to come."

The inscription recognizes the integral role the team has played in Boston's cultural fabric over the decades.
