First, it was David Pastrnak, and now Brad Marchand. The Boston Bruins captain had strong words in response to a report on a Boston sports talk show that said that he and Pastrnak were feuding.
Pastrnak strongly denied the report in his media availability on Friday, and Marchand did the same in a recent interview.
Here is what Marchand had to say:
“You know it's unfortunate. I know reporters have a job to do, and you know that job is to report on the team and usually you try to be fact-based, but when there's just blatant lies told in the media, that's where there's a problem. And the fact that this guy has a platform and he's just making stuff up is embarrassing, and there's zero truth to anything that he said on the radio. This is how you lose your job very quickly. The fact that he's gonna have a job after this is insane because Pasta and I are best friends. We've had an incredibly close relationship for a long time. The only reason we'll play together is so that we can spread depth throughout the line."
"Now there's zero truth to him being a problem in the room. He's one of the most loved guys in the room. There's zero issues in the room at all. And the fact that they say that he's in the center of anything is a completely fabricated lie. So this guy has zero merit to anything he's saying. It's very frustrating because this is what happens, obviously, we have not pulled our weight this year. We have not had the seasons that we wanted to have. But I'm not going to let some random guy come in the media and just spit absolute nonsense. And so I mean, from this point forward, this guy has zero credibility. The fact that he's coming out with this is ridiculous. It's embarrassing. And, you know, just anything that he puts forth in the future is now not going to be deemed as truth, because he's completely just making all of this stuff. And, you know, it's unfortunate, if he would have done some kind of fact, he probably just made this up."
Marchand is in the midst of somewhat of a down season statistically. The Nova Scotia native has 33 points, 15 goals and 18 assists in 44 games this season. He's on a pace for 62 points across a full 82-game season, which is solid production, though it would be his lowest point total since the 2015-16 campaign.
The Bruins need their superstars Marchand and Pastrnak to channel all this noise and use it as motivation moving forward.
Rich Keefe has responded to Brad Marchand calling him out
The man who spread the word about a potential rift between Brad Marchand and David Pastrnak responded to the Bruins captain who called for his job.
"Now I got Marchand calling for my job?" Keefe tweeted on Friday. "No one acts this way if the story is really false. Thanks for the confirmation."
The reason for the rumors of a rift between Marchand and Pastrnak is undoubtedly due to the struggles of the team. The Boston Bruins have lost six games in a row and have been outscored by a whopping 24-11 margin during that span.
Boston has dropped down to a wild card spot in the Eastern Conference and now has the Columbus Blue Jackets (44 points) and Pittsburgh Penguins (44 points) nipping at its heels. This comes after much-improved results to begin Joe Sacco's tenure as interim head coach. Unfortunately, it appears the new coach bump has now worn off.
Marchand and the Bruins will look to snap out of this funk tomorrow afternoon in Florida against the Panthers. The puck drops at 1 p.m. EST at Amerant Bank Arena.
