Ottawa Senators captain Brady Tkachuk expressed concerns for defenseman Jacob Bernard-Docker following a frightening injury during Monday's practice.
Bernard-Docker fell hard into the boards and was unable to put weight on his right leg, requiring assistance from teammates to leave the ice. Tkachuk was among those who helped the 24-year-old off the ice.
After practice, Brady Tkachuk said he hopes for the best for his teammate. He also revealed that when the unfortunate accident occurred, Bernard-Docker and teammate Zack Ostapchuk were engaged in a drill, working hard to execute it correctly.
“I think him and [Ostapchuk] were both trying to do the right thing getting on the puck quick and trying to do the drill the right way," he explained. "That kind of goes into a game," Tkachuk said via TSN's Claire Hanna on X/Twitter.
"Whenever you see something like that, an accident, it’s obviously really hard to see. I’m really hoping it’s not too bad for JBD because he works so hard and does everything right. Really hoping for him that it’s not too bad. There’s probably a million thoughts that go through his head at a time like that," he added.
"I just wanted him to let it all out and it sucks. I just want to be there for him. There’s not really a right thing to say in that time. I think when we were going off the ice everybody was just kind of around and offering support," he added.
There's currently no update regarding the status of Jacob Benard-Docker. The defenseman was drafted No. 25 overall by the Senators in the 2018 NHL draft. This year, he has accumulated four points through a goal and three assists in 25 games with a plus+2 rating.
Brady Tkachuk shares his thoughts about Team USA clinching gold at WJC
Team USA celebrated a thrilling victory, securing their second consecutive World Junior Championships gold medal by edging out Finland 4-3 in OT on Sunday.
Tkachuk was among the notable NHL players at Canadian Tire Centre to show his support for the Americans. He was delighted that Team USA came out on top.
"It was definitely nice that the US boys came out on top. It was pretty cool to see where we practice, play every game, just to see a celebration on the ice like that. It’s definitely something that we want to experience, us being out there and celebrating like that," Tkachuk said via TSN.
Brady Tkachuk and the Senators (19-17-2) will be up against the Detroit Red Wings (17-18-4) next on Tuesday. The puck drops at 7:00 p.m. ET.
