Buffalo Sabres goaltender Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen made his frustration clear after the debatable no-call on goalie interference during the team's 3-2 overtime loss against the Winnipeg Jets.
The play in question came on the Jets' opening goal scored by Gabriel Vilardi. Replays showed Vilardi making contact with Luukkonen's glove, impacting the goalie's ability to make the save.
The Buffalo Sabres challenged the play for goalie interference but the call on the ice stood after officials determined the contact occurred outside the crease.
"I feel like that's bullsh*t," Luukkonen said postgame. "There's no way I can make a save on that. I'm not that far out from the crease. It's a quick game, it's hard for the refs to make the right calls always, but I have no chance to make a save on that play."
Sabres head coach Lindy Ruff echoed his goaltender's frustration with the controversial non-call.
"You don't know unless you challenge. It's that kind of grey (area)," Ruff said. "I thought, just the fact that he wasn't allowed to make the save, that's an interference penalty."
Ruff added that even though the goalie went through was out of the crease, it doesn't mean players can run the goalie over. He emphasized that it's always a hit-and-miss situation.
Buffalo Sabres' rookie Tyson Kozak's first NHL goal disallowed
Rookie Tyson Kozak appeared to score his first career NHL goal in the second period to tie 2-2, but it was ultimately disallowed due to goalie interference.
The call left Kozak disappointed but optimistic after an otherwise impressive NHL debut.
“I mean, obviously it sucks for it to be disallowed," he said after the game. "But I kinda saw open net and I had to park in the slot and just had to put it in… It sucks even more for us to lose in overtime."
Kozak was only informed the morning of the game that he would be making his NHL debut:
"Early this morning actually. I guess my parents got in last night, I didn't know about it. I saw them this morning in the hotel lobby. So, it was kind of a surprise to me. I was wondering what they were doing here, but it was a pretty cool moment for sure."
Despite some obvious nerves, Kozak settled in comfortably in his first NHL action. Dylan Cozens and Tage Thompson scored for the Buffalo Sabres. Kyle Connor and Adam Lowry added goals for the Jets. Connor Hellebuyck made 28 saves for Winnipeg while Luukkonen stopped 28 shots in defeat.
The Buffalo Sabres will next face the Utah Hockey Club on Friday night.
