The Buffalo Sabres suffered a 1-5 defeat against the Carolina Hurricanes on Wednesday.
Head Coach Don Granato spoke to the media after the match and said that the Sabres never managed to play their game and were also out of sync. The Canes piled on the pressure and played as a unit throughout the match. Granato also said that the team never got into any rhythm, which was quite frustrating for them:
"We couldn't get to our game. There was one team that was in sync and one team that wasn't in sync and that was us. It was quite frustrating for us. Never got into any rhythm. It's unfortunate that it happened."
When asked about the process of bouncing back from a loss like this, Granato reflected on the team's inability to sustain their gameplay. There were moments when it seemed like they would be able to turn it around, but that proved not to be the case.
Granato talked about Buffalo's ability to bounce back from such a defeat. He said that his players are a special bunch and that they "eat, sleep and breathe hockey." They will use the All-Star break to recuperate and put in their all for the second half of the season.
"We never sustained anything today. There was a flash but nothing else. That's on us. It's unfortunate that it happened. You can look in the mirror and change things. This group is special and have a good break knowing that the stretch run will be very challenging."
The Buffalo Sabres' 2022-23 NHL Season so far
The Sabres are projected to have their best NHL campaign in the last five years. They are currently fourth in the Atlantic Division with a 26-20-4 record.
Tage Thompson leads the team in goals (34) and points (68) this season. Against the Hurricanes, Thompson suffered an upper-body injury and left the match in the second period. Buffalo are yet to announce the extent of his injury and what the timeline looks like for his return.
The Sabres will try to put Wednesday's disappointment behind them as they look to contend for the Stanley Cup. Thompson is integral to their ambitions and much hinges on how long he will be sidelined for.
