NHL fans are buzzing with anticipation as they weigh in on Alexis Lafreniere's potential breakthrough season.
An NHL poll on social media (X/Twitter) has ignited debate asking fans whether Lafreniere will surpass the 70-point mark this season.
The young winger, who notched up a respectable 57 points last year, seems poised for a breakout campaign in the eyes of many supporters.
One fan predicts:
"Over 70. Signs an 8mil extension. Then goes back to getting 45p a season."
Another fan confidently wrote:
"Yes. 70+ points with PP1 time."
A fan points out that Lafreniere will exceed the 70-point mark.
"Bingo. Also if carries over what he did in the playoffs I can see him getting lose if not 70 without it. That said get him on PP1," on X.
However, not all fans share this optimism.
"Bustfreniere," One fan wrote on X.
"Who the hell cares about fantasy? Will he break out for real in the real question! My gosh, what damage fantasy and gambling have done to professional sports!!!!," another fan wrote.
"I still think under but certainly one day over. He will probably get about 60+ points though," a user commented.
As the season approaches, the pressure mounts on Lafreniere to prove that he can be a cornerstone of the Rangers' future.
Alexis Lafreniere's contract extension with the Rangers
The New York Rangers have a big decision ahead regarding star winger Alexis Lafreniere. The former first overall pick is entering the final year of his entry-level contract and is set to become a restricted free agent next season.
NHL analyst Dan Rosen shared his thoughts on NHL.com on Wednesday.
"I have no doubt Lafreniere will sign a new contract with the Rangers at some point. They won't lose him. He's a huge part of their present and future.”
Rosen points out the Rangers have two other key RFAs next summer, goalie Igor Shesterkin and defenseman K'Andre Miller.
“But New York's cap structure for next season and several beyond will be determined by goalie Igor Shesterkin's next contract. ... He needs to be the top priority, before Lafreniere and defenseman K'Andre Miller, who also has one year left on his contract, are taken care of."
Securing their young core players is crucial for the Texas Rangers' Stanley Cup window. Extending Alexis Lafreniere will be a key part of that process in the coming year, predicts Rosen.
