Vancouver Canucks coach Rick Tocchet shared his thoughts about the 2-0 shutout loss to the Carolina Hurricanes on Friday night at PNC Arena. The loss dropped the Canucks to 18-13-10 on the season, marking their fourth straight defeat.
In his post-game media availability, Tocchet expressed frustration over the missed scoring opportunities that plagued the Canucks all night.
"Well, I think we had 25 missed shots when we had attempts at the net, you know, out of like 50 total," Tocchet said. "You got to hit the net. I mean, that's the frustrating part. We had a lot of o-zone time, but we're just missing opportunities."
Tocchet emphasized the need to get pucks to the net rather than overpassing. He pointed out missed chances arise from two-on-one where passes might not connect.
On improving their shooting as the lowest shooting team in the NHL, Tocchet said:
"I mean there's opportunities to take the puck or like hit the net, shoot, like there's no magic tic-tac-toe stuff. ... We gotta try to generate some stuff, but we need people to move their feet too."
Jordan Staal and Andrei Svechnikov scored for the Hurricanes, while Dustin Tokarski stopped all 14 shots he faced. Canucks goalie Thatcher Demko, who had missed three games with back spasms, made 18 saves in a losing effort.
Canucks defenceman Tyler Myers calls for more intensity after loss to the Hurricanes
Defenceman Tyler Myers acknowledged that the team needs to come out with more intensity and determination.
"Whether they played the night or before or not, we want to come out a certain way," Myers said (per Sportsnet).
"We did some good things, but there are also areas we need to clean up and find ways to get more pucks and bodies to the net. That's something that would really help our group."
Despite the disappointing result, Myers remained positive.
"But you know what? You've got to stay positive. We've got a chance tomorrow night to come back and win a hockey game, and we've just got to come together and come out ready to play tomorrow.”Myers added.
Vancouver will look to regroup when they take on the Maple Leafs at Scotiabank Arena.
