Vancouver Canucks President Jim Rutherford spoke about Brock Boeser’s contract situation on Saturday, revealing that the team was evaluating the situation. NHL insider Dan Riccio shared Rutherford’s comments on X, noting the team president’s non-committal stance.
“Right now, we’re evaluating his situation." Rutherford said, "The key is going to be what that contract looks like, what the term looks like.… It’s like all contracts, the player is going to have a difference of opinion than what the team has, and we’ll continue to watch this really close.”
Brock Boeser is in the third year of a three-year, $19.95 million deal signed in July 2022. He carries a $6.65 million cap hit per season. This season, Boeser has 19 points (8 goals, 11 assists) in 22 games. His scoring has helped secure key wins. Boeser scored a goal in a 4-0 victory over the Florida Panthers and contributed a goal and an assist in a 5-2 win against the Columbus Blue Jackets.
Boeser’s contributions have been crucial to Vancouver. In twelve wins, he holds a positive +/- rating of +5 with five goals and seven assists. However, his -8 rating in nine losses shows the Canucks' reliance on his performance. When Boeser produces, the team often wins.
Over his career, Brock Boeser has recorded 403 points in 501 NHL games. He remains a strong offensive player, especially on the power play, with three goals and five assists this season. As contract discussions continue, Boeser’s importance to the Canucks’ playoff hopes is clear. Both sides aim to find a resolution that works for the future.
Rutherford delves into Canucks home games struggles
Vancouver Canucks President Jim Rutherford also spoke about the team’s struggles at home during his interview on the "After Hours" show. The Canucks have a 15-9-5 record but struggle at home compared to their strong road record of 10-2-1. Rutherford said the team lacked urgency at home.
"We beat ourselves at home sometimes... We don't play with the same urgency at home." Rutherford said. "On the road, we seem to be more comfortable... but we better fix them (the problems at home) quick because you can't be a playoff team with a record like we have at home."
Rutherford stressed the need for quick improvements, saying their current home record won’t help them make the playoffs. The Canucks will play their next home game against Colorado, and Brock Boeser's contributions could be crucial to securing victory in that game.
