NHL fans on social media reacted as the New York Rangers inked defenseman Will Borgen to a five-year, $20.5 million, contract extension on Saturday.

The contract has an average annual value of $4.1 million and will begin next season. Will Borgen joined the Rangers last month after they traded forward Kaapo Kakko to the Seattle Kraken.

The 28-year-old was in the final year of a two-year contract with the Kraken and was set to become a restricted free agent after this season.

Here's how fans on X (formerly Twitter) reacted to Borgen's contract extension. One said:

"HOLY OVERPAY. CHRIS DRURY IS SUCH A FRAUD."

Another chimed in:

"This is not going to age well."

Here are some of the other top reactions on X:

"Anybody else a little confused by this. Has his performance so far with the team warranted a five year extension? Seems like a little much for me for his historical performance and age. Cap ceiling raise will make this irrelevant if he plays decent for 3-4 years of this," a second fan posted.
"In an age where middle of the road players are being paid like superstars, why not? Look around the league and see what 50 point scorers are getting. Might as well raise the cap to $200 million and triple ticket prices…," posted another X user.
"He needs to update his social medias that he is part of this team and make that official with this kind of contract," another chimed in.
"I don’t understand this move at all. That’s a ridiculous extension, dude’s been here for 5 secs. I wish my job was like that!," posted another.

How has Will Borgen fared this season?

Will Borgen has accumulated three points since his trade from the Kraken. Overall, he has garnered six points through three goals and as many assists in 51 games this season.

Borgen has played alongside K'Andre Miller as a part of a defensive pairing during his short stint with the Rangers . Since Jacob Trouba's trade in December, Borgen has emerged as a solid addition to the Blueshirts' defensive restructuring.

"He's been outstanding since he's been here," New York coach Peter Laviolette said this week.
"For me, he's a big reason why things have quieted down a little bit. He skates well; he's physical; he plays with an edge, and he doesn't back down from anybody."

The Rangers (24-21-4) host the Carolina Hurricanes at MSG on Tuesday.
