USA team forward Cole Eiserman provided some insight into his message to the Canadian bench after scoring a crucial power-play goal in the United States' 4-1 win over Canada in the group stage of the World Junior Championship on Tuesday.
Eiserman's goal at 13:21 of the third period put the US up 3-1 after Canada's Easton Cowan was called for boarding.
As Eiserman celebrated near the Canadian bench, he appeared to taunt the opposition with some choice words.
"Just probably stuff I shouldn’t say on the mic," Cole Eiserman said after the game when asked about the exchange. "Good fun on the ice, and that stuff doesn’t come off the ice. Just on the ice, I like to be competitive and have fun."
After defeating Canada on their home turf, Eiserman said:
"That's something that's storybook-like … Something that you've dreamt of."
The United States got goals from Danny Nelson, Cole Hutson and Ryan Leonard in addition to Eiserman's tally. Goaltender Trey Augustine made 38 saves to lead the Americans to the crucial victory. Bradley Nadeau had Canada's lone goal, while Carter George stopped 24 shots in net.
The win allowed the US to clinch first place in Group A, setting up a favorable quarterfinal matchup with Switzerland. Canada, meanwhile, ended third in the group and face the Czechs next.
How Cole Eiserman & USA beat Canada
Team USA got off to a strong start, with Cole Hutson scoring a power play goal late in the first period to give the Americans the lead.
In the early third period, Canada levelled the scores at a power play by Bradley Nadeau’s goal.
"We'd rather play in a sold-out building, even if the fans are against us," U.S. head coach David Carle said (per Sportsnet). "Really fun environment to be a part of."
However, USA responded quickly as Danny Nelson scored at 4:22 to regain the lead. Later in the period, USA extended their lead with another power play goal from Cole Eiserman. With under two minutes left, Ryan Leonard added an empty net goal to seal the 4-1 victory for the Americans.
"Beating them in their home country, I don’t think it gets much better than that" Huston said.
After the final buzzer, cheers of "U-S-A!" echoed through the crowd of American fans.
