Edmonton Oilers captain Connor McDavid has been in the headlines following his three-game suspension by the NHL for a cross-check on Conor Garland during Saturday's loss to the Vancouver Canucks.
The suspension has sparked controversy and debate about its validity from fans and analysts alike. In a separate incident, Houston Texans running back Joe Mixon was fined $25,000 by the NFL for criticizing officials after the Texans' Divisional Round game against the Kansas City Chiefs.
The league's fine was a result of a social media post where Mixon was found to be accusing officials of favoring the Chiefs.
Frustrated with the situation, Mixon took to social media to express his discontent. He referenced Connor McDavid's suspension, humorously questioning whether he would also be fined for someone else's actions in a different sport.
"I’m getting fined by the @nfl for what someone else said. What’s next? I get fined by them for Connor McDavid cross checking an opponent on a @nhl game!" Mixon wrote on X.
According to reports, Joe Mixon's agent, Peter Schaffer, has informed that they are going to appeal the fine.
Connor McDavid opened up about receiving the suspension
Connor McDavid broke his silence for the first time since receiving a three-game suspension for his cross-check on Conor Garland late in the third period of Saturday's game.
McDavid acknowledged the league's decision but expressed his disagreement with the severity of the punishment. He emphasized that while he understands the need for penalties in the league, he feels that the suspension may have been a bit harsh.
"I don't have too much to ask or too much to add. The league made their decision. You know, I don't necessarily agree with it." McDavid said.
"I'm not saying that there shouldn't been any penalty or any suspension or anything like that. Maybe I just might be a little bit harsh, but you have to understand their decision and move on," McDavid said.
Meanwhile, NHL insider Chris Johnston reported that despite some disappointment regarding the three-game suspension handed to McDavid by NHL Player Safety, the Oilers captain has chosen not to appeal the decision.
McDavid will return from his suspension against the Seattle Kraken next week on Monday. The Oilers captain has accumulated 65 points through 20 goals and 45 assists in 43 games this season.
