On Friday, NHL insider Kevin Weekes shared a cryptic tweet, causing rumors about potential changes for the Pittsburgh Penguins. Weekes posted a picture of the Pittsburgh skyline and tagged analyst Ryan Callahan in the caption with an eyes emoji.
Another insider, Danny Shirey, explained Weekes' history of similar tweets. He said that the last time Weekes tweeted about Pittsburgh, it led to Todd Reirden’s firing as an assistant coach.
"The last time Weekes did this with Pittsburgh, he went silent until Todd Reirden was officially fired and then tweeted “per my previous tweet, Todd Reirden out as Penguins’ assistant” 💀💀💀" Shirey tweeted.
Paul Bissonnette, a former NHL player and analyst, added his thoughts. He suggested that Sidney Crosby, the Penguins captain, could be traded to the Colorado Avalanche.
Bissonnette has previously supported the idea of a Crosby trade. He believes Crosby’s talent may be underused on a team that has struggled to stay competitive.
"Holy fuck buckle back up we’re about to go through it. That’s Pittsburgh’s sky line when I went to school. CROSBY TO THE AVS???," Bissonnette tweeted.
However, it's unlikely that Crosby will leave Pittsburgh. In September, he signed a two-year, $17.4 million contract with the Pittsburgh Penguins.
The deal shows his intent to stay with the team. Crosby could have asked for more money or explored other opportunities after scoring 90-plus points in the last two seasons but chose to remain in Pittsburgh. Last season, he scored 94 points as the team narrowly missed a playoff spot.
In his statement following the Contract extension, Crosby shared his desire to stay with the Penguins. In September, he said:
“Just glad that it’s done and I’m really happy to know that I’ll be here for a few more years. My last contract, I don’t think I thought about the possibility of still playing beyond that, so I’m just really happy that it’s worked out this way.”
General manager Kyle Dubas hints at trades to revamp the Pittsburgh Penguins roster
Pittsburgh Penguins general manager Kyle Dubas is reportedly looking for trades to improve the roster. That aligns with the Weekes' speculation about organizational moves.
"I think every team in the league knows what we're trying to achieve," Dubas shared on Wednesday, per NHL.com.
"As our actions have shown from last March on, we're trying to bring in younger NHL players, we're trying to bring in prospects, and we're trying to bring in draft picks."
For now, it remains unclear what Weekes’ tweet means for the Pittsburgh Penguins.
