Carolina Hurricanes coach Rod Brind’Amour’s son Skyler has reportedly agreed to terms with the Canes. While the deal has yet to be confirmed, insider Elliotte Friedman supported the initial rumors about the termination of Skyler Brind’Amour’s AHL deal and his possible signing with the Hurricanes, as reported in a post on X by Tony Androckitis.
"Skyler Brind'Amour originally signed 2-year AHL deal with Charlotte through 2024-25. Sources say Charlotte & Brind'Amour mutually agreed to terminate final year of deal. Possible Brind'Amour has signed an NHL contract with Carolina. I'm Told he's in CAR org now. @InsideAHLHockey," Androckitis posted on X.
While the news sparked interest across the league, some fans took advantage of the opportunity to poke fun at Rod Brind’Amour’s son joining the team his father coaches. Here’s a look at some hilarious fan reactions.
“Daddy getting him a roster spot,” one fan said.
“My name is Skyler Brind'Amour, yo. My father is Rod Brind'Amour, yo,” another fan said.
“Industry plant,” a fan said.
Beyond funny comments, some fans showed their skepticism at the news. These fans pointed out the apparent lack of impact this move could have on the Carolina Hurricanes organization. Let’s look at what these fans had to say:
“We care why exactly?” a fan said.
“Canes fan here - not loving this. Not a good look…,” one fan said.
“8 pts in 54 AHL games,” another fan said.
It remains to be seen whether Rod Brind’Amour will ever get a chance to coach his son in the NHL. In the meantime, it seems the Hurricanes will give Skyler a chance to make the big club, fulfilling a father-son dream.
Rod Brind’Amour's journey to the NHL
Rod Brind’Amour and the Carolina Hurricanes organization hope Skyler can make an impact at the NHL level. Skyler Brind’Amour was originally drafted in the sixth round of the 2017 draft by the Edmonton Oilers.
However, Skyler Brind’Amour did not sign with the Oilers at that point, opting to play in the NCAA at Quinnipiac University. In his four years there, Brind’Amour had his share of ups and downs. His best season came in 2022-23 when he registered 14 goals and 32 points in 41 games.
From the NCAA, Skyler Brind’Amour signed with the Charlotte Checkers of the AHL. The Checkers are the Hurricanes’ AHL affiliate, potentially opening a road to the NHL for the junior Brind’Amour.
Last season, Skyler notched eight points in 54 games with the Checkers. This season, Skyler Brind’Amour was expected to return to the Checkers for another season. However, it seems he will get a look at the Hurricanes’ training camp.
While Skyler Brind’Amour’s numbers don’t jump off the page, his physical presence and skill set could prove valuable to the Canes in a depth role. At 6’2” and 188 pounds, Skyler could provide the Canes with a solid physical presence with some offensive upside.
Ultimately, spending some time under his father’s tutelage could help Skyler evolve into an NHLer resembling his father’s two-way playing style.
