Bruce Boudreau, a respected NHL coach, recently discussed John Tavares' contract situation on the Nov. 29 episode of the "1st Up" podcast.

Tavares, the Toronto Maple Leafs captain, is in the final year of his seven-year, $77 million deal. The deal was signed in 2018 when he joined Leafs in free agency.

The 34-year-old will be an unrestricted free agent in 2025, and negotiations for a new contract are reportedly ongoing.

Boudreau believes Tavares might accept a team-friendly deal if it offers a longer term. He suggested that a four-year deal at $6-7 million annually could work for both sides.

"I think he is, you know, he's willing to give a team-friendly contract," Boudreau said. "And I don't know John at all, but I'm just trying to think for him right here, as long as there's some, a little bit of term to it, like, I mean, if he could get four years, I think out of Toronto, you know, for a lot less, like, who knows, the 6-7 million. "I think it would be a deal done in a heartbeat, but because he's having a great year ... He doesn't seem to be slowing down," Boudreau added.

Boudreau praised Tavares’ intelligence, leadership, and ability to adapt his game. He compared him to players like Joe Pavelski and Corey Perry, who thrived despite not being the fastest skaters.

"So you don't have to worry about him slowing down, but his intelligence with the puck, his leadership on the ice, all of those things are paramount and should be taken into account," Boudreau said. "And I think he's a big part of that team, and I'd hate to lose him."

Tavares has been highly productive this season, recording 20 points in 21 games, including nine goals and 11 assists. He’s on track to finish with approximately 34 goals and 41 assists, per ESPN.

John Tavares has expressed his desire to remain with the team, stating in September:

"I want to be here long-term. Hopefully that happens."

Since joining the Maple Leafs in 2018, he has scored 439 points in 461 regular-season games.

NHL Insider Darren Dreger's comment on John Tavares

Previously, insider Darren Dreger talked about the Maple Leafs' situation with John Tavares. He said the Leafs will have to be cut-throat with Tavares.

"5.5 is rich for me, very rich. And is he worth 5.5 probably," Dreger said. "But if I'm the Toronto Maple Leafs, ... it's 'Hey, John, this is it, or we're letting you walk.'"

As contract talks continue, John Tavares’ leadership and performance will be key factors in shaping the Maple Leafs’ decision.
