New Jersey Devils coach Sheldon Keefe provided an update on goaltender Jacob Markstrom, who left Wednesday's game against the Boston Bruins due to a lower-body injury.
The injury occurred early in the first period after a collision with the Bruins' Justin Brazeau sent him crashing into the goal post. Markstrom was seen lying facedown on the ice as he was assessed by the medical staff member.
Despite initially struggling to get up, Jacob Markstrom managed to skate off the ice by himself. After the game, Keefe provided an update on Markstrom's condition, stating that they would need some time to assess the full extent of his injury.
“We’ll take some time before we have a full extent on (Markstrom) but I talked to him and he was in good spirits. He commented to me that he’s feeling a lot better now than he was before so that’s positive news," Keefe said post-game.
Markstrom conceded a goal and made six saves before exiting the game. He was replaced by Jake Allen, who blocked all 16 shots in the Devils' emphatic 5-1 win over the Bruins.
How New Jersey Devils downed Boston Bruins
On Wednesday, the New Jersey Devils hosted the Boston Bruins at Prudential Center.
Morgan Geekie was the only scorer for the Bruins, putting them ahead 1-0 at 5:50 of the first period. Coming into the second period, Dawson Mercer tied the game 1-1 for the home team.
New Jersey scored twice on the power play, with goals from Dougie Hamilton and Stefan Noesen, taking a 3-1 lead. With less than four minutes left in the period, Mercer netted his second goal of the night, extending the Devils' lead to 4-1.
"The second period was a big momentum changer,” Mercer said via NHL.com. “There was a sequence where pretty much every line had a shift in the offensive zone before there was a whistle. I think that kind of just put us in a different level, in a different gear, and I think we just ran with it from there right to the end of the game.”
At 13:32 in the third period, Nico Hischier scored on the power play, sealing a 5-1 victory for New Jersey. Hischier accumulated three points while Hamilton, Timo Meier, and Mercer accumulated two points apiece for the Devils, who improved their record to 27-17-6.
