Mitch Marner's comments following the Toronto Maple Leafs' 3-0 loss to the Vancouver Canucks upset many fans. Toronto had started the 2025 season strong, but now they’ve lost two games in a row. The loss to Vancouver was especially frustrating, as the Canucks had little time to prepare after a weather delay.

The Leafs were sloppy and made several mistakes during the game, including struggling in the power play. Fans wanted a more honest reflection from Marner, but instead, he said:

"I liked it. I thought we played well, I really did. The last couple of games, we’ve been giving up plays to teams that aren’t missing on them."

He mentioned that the Leafs gave up plays to teams that didn’t miss their chances.

The Leafs had been outscored 9-3 in their last two games. Their defense was weak, fans expected Marner to be more critical of the team’s performance. Instead, he seemed to ignore the obvious issues.

Following this, fans expressed their frustration on X (formerly Twitter).

"Didn't think Mitchy was that far removed from reality," a fan said.
"Don’t sign this delusional prick," another fan commented.
"Giant loser mentality. Be better Marner," a fan wrote.

Marner’s positive comments about the game only made the gap in mindset more obvious. Here are some more reactions from fans on X:

"Marner has never been very self aware or good with accountability," a fan said.
"Chris Tanev on the Leafs performance against Vancouver: “Not good enough. They outworked us. That’s why they won.” Marner: I love the way we played. ... Marner has been horrendous these past 2 games," another commented.
"Brutherrrrr is cookeddddd… god damn, this guy can’t be fr after a game like that," another user added.

Leafs struggle offensively in 3-0 loss to Canucks

The Leafs lost to the Vancouver Canucks on Saturday. The first goal came 31 seconds in when Brock Boeser redirected a Tyler Myers shot to give the Canucks a 1-0 lead. John Tavares had a breakaway stopped by Kevin Lankinen, keeping the game 1-0.

In the second period, Quinn Hughes’ shot was deflected into the net by Toronto’s Simon Benoit, making it 2-0. Early in the third, Kiefer Sherwood scored off a pass from Hughes, pushing the lead to 3-0.

Toronto’s power play struggled, managing only two shots on three chances. The Leafs couldn’t generate enough offense and lost their second straight game. Vancouver’s strong play and goaltending led to the win.
