The Edmonton Oilers have added forward Vasily Podkolzin from the Vancouver Canucks. The trade was confirmed on Sunday, with the Oilers sending a 2025 fourth-round pick, acquired from Ottawa, to Vancouver.
The trade comes as the Oilers decide whether to match the St. Louis Blues' offer sheets for Philip Broberg and Dylan Holloway. The Oilers tweeted:
"The #Oilers have acquired forward Vasily Podkolzin from Vancouver in exchange for a 2025 fourth-round draft pick that was originally acquired from Ottawa."
NHL fans quickly reacted to the news:
"We don’t want these washed Canucks," one fan said.
"This guy you traded for won’t even be good in 2 years. Get used to Stan bowman trading picks away for assets that aren’t good," another fan commented.
"Holloway and Broberg are gone now for sure," one X user said.
More reactions included:
"I bet Dylan is yelling at his agent for that dumb as rocks decision to sign the OS. No way he makes more longterm in STL. Prob thought Edmonton would match 100%. Stupid stupid move by Holloway," one fan said.
"This is a move to let Broberg go, get the 2nd round pick, package with Ceci and Podkolzin to get a D-man replacement, matching Holloway," a fan tweeted.
"Broberg and Halloway cost is 6.7 mill. This replaces Halloway at 1 mill. Great signing as he will be better all around. Now to get someone good as or better than Broberg at a cost of 5.7mill to say not matching was smart... Can get some great young D more proven for alot less," a fan commented.
Vancouver Canucks GM Patrik Allvin thanks Vasily Podkolzin after trade to Oilers
Vancouver Canucks general manager Patrik Allvin thanked Podkolzin for his work and wished him success in Edmonton:
“We would like to thank Vasily for his time here with the Canucks. Podz put in a lot of work both on and off the ice, and we wish him all the best in Edmonton.”
Podkolzin had a quiet season with the Vancouver Canucks, recording two assists in 19 NHL games. He did better in the AHL, scoring 15 goals and 13 assists in 44 games with Abbotsford. In his NHL career, Podkolzin has 18 goals and 17 assists in 135 games.
Podkolzin was drafted 10th overall by Vancouver Canucks in 2019 and signed a two-year, $2-million extension in April. Now in Edmonton, he has a chance to start afresh with the Oilers.
