Craig Berube was fired as the head coach of the St. Louis Blues on December 12 after spending six seasons with the team.
Craig Berube will be replaced Drew Bannister, the interim head coach. Bannister was previously the head coach for Blues' AHL affiliate, Springfield Thunderbinds, and is a former NHL defenceman.
St. Louis Blues fans were divided over Berube being relieved of his duties. Some were of the opinion that team President Doug Armstrong should have been the one fired over Berube,
"Dougie Armstrong is the one who needs to boot. Stillman family should’ve canned Armstrong after not resigning Petro: - keatotthecheetoh
Some fans were against Craig Berube's firing and vented their frustration of seeing the Stanley Cup winning coach leave,
Breube had been at the helm for the Blues since the 2018-19 season when he led won the Blues to a Stanley Cup in his first season. Since then, the Blues have made the playoffs four straight seasons. The streak came to an end last season when they missed the playoffs.
The Blues are currently 6th in the Central Division and 22nd in the league overall. They have a 13-14-1 record and are currently on a four-game losing streak. Their most recent was a 6-4 loss against Detroit Red Wings.
Craig Berube is the third NHL coach to be fired this season. Oilers' Jay Woodcroft and Wild's Dean Evason were the first two to be relieved from the head coaching duties earlier this season.
Loss to Detroit was Craig Berube's final nail in the coffin
Craig Berube's final game as Blues head coach was last night's 6-4 loss to the Detroit Red Wings.
Brandon Saad opened the scoring for the Blues, 5:56 into the first period. Red Wings answered back with two goals from Jake Walman and Jonatan Berggren, one of the prospects involved in trade rumors with Montreal Canadiens.
The Blues started the second period with two goals from Kevin Hayes. Red Wings defenseman Moritz Seider scored the equalizer before Marco Scandella scored a shorthanded goal to give St. Louis a 4-3 lead heading into the final period.
The Detroit Red Wings equalized 0:48 into the third period with Lucas Raymond's powerplay goal. Robby Fabri scored the go-ahead goal at the 6:38-minute mark with Michael Rasmussen scoring the game's final foal into the St. Louis Blues empty net.
Per NHL.com, Blues forward Kevin Hayes spoke about the loss to Red Wings and said,
"We're all professionals here.... We've all got to show up and do our job, work at your job. No single guy is going to get us out of it. We have to do it together as a group."
Drew Barrister's first game as St. Louis Blues head coach will be at home against the Ottawa Senators on Thursday, Decemeber 14.
