Goaltender Arturs Silovs signed a two-year deal worth $850,000 per season with the Vancouver Canucks on Tuesday. Silovs stepped into a starting role during last season's playoffs due to injuries suffered by other players. He had a .898 save percentage in 10 playoff games and .907 in the AHL with 34 games.
Silovs was the first rookie goaltender in Canucks history to record a series-clinching win alongside a playoff shutout. Upon hearing the news, NHL fans began commenting underneath insider Frank Seravalli's announcement post, with many expressing that Silovs deserved a better deal.
"Dude needs a new agent," one fan said.
"Unreal deal for the Canucks," another fan commented.
One X user expressed indirect praise for Arturs Silovs:
"Canucks are winning the cup next year"
The barrage of disgruntled comments regarding his NHL deal kept flooding in.
"You guys don’t know understand anything img he wasn’t getting more as a rookie backup/3rd string," one fan tweeted.
"He got ripped off," a fan posted.
"That is a solid deal for the Canucks. Kid is going to be good," the fan commented.
Canucks GM praises Arturs Silovs' role for 2024-25 season
General Manager Patrik Allvin praised Arturs Silovs' growth and development, expecting him to bring a competitive edge to the training camp.
"Arturs helped us out a lot when called upon last year as he continues to grow and develop as a goalie," Allvin said (via NHL.com). "We expect him to come into training camp and battle for a full-time position with the big club.
"Our group will continue to work with him to help sharpen his skills and provide him with all the tools necessary to take another step forward in his young career."
Thatcher Demko is set as the starter for the 2024-25 season. However, Silovs, drafted in the sixth round in 2019, remains important. Last season, he had a 3-0-1 record with a 2.47 goals-against average. With Casey DeSmith leaving for Dallas, Arturs Silovs could compete for more ice time or serve as a backup.

President of Hockey Operations, Jim Rutherford pointed out first-class facilities and strong local support in Penticton as reasons for the decision:
"The facilities are first class, the fans in the interior are very passionate and the players, coaches and staff really enjoy what the city and region has to offer." (via hockeynews.com).
The team plans to connect more with fans in British Columbia.
