Washington Capitals center Dylan Strome shared a post on his Instagram Story congratulating his teammate John Carlson on reaching 700 career points. Strome shared a celebratory reel the Capitals’s official IG account posted, along with a five-word caption, which read:
“700 for @jc7474 (John Carlson’s Instagram handle)..that good?”
The tongue-in-cheek post highlighted Carlson’s amazing achievement. On Monday, the $64-million two-way defenseman recorded two assists in the Capitals game against the Buffalo Sabres, taking his career points tally to 700. He became the 31st NHL defenseman to cross this milestone and is one of six active players to do so.
The Washington Capitals alternate captain is only the 13th defenseman to reach 700 points playing for a single franchise. This also makes him the Capitals’ leader among defensemen in goals, assists and points.
“It seems like it took a while, but it’s a big accomplishment I think, personally,” Carlson said via NHL.com. “I’ve been lucky enough to play on a great team my whole career, and with fantastic players. I couldn’t have dreamt of it as a kid, so it’s pretty special.”
The 58-second highlight reel recaps some of John Carlson’s most prominent career moments, starting with his first NHL goal in 2010. It also showcases different milestones, such as when he became the leading goalscorer and points leader among defensemen for the Capitals. The clip also marks Carlson’s 100th goal and 500th, 600th and 700th point.
John Carlson has played 1049 games over 16 seasons with Washington. He holds the franchise record for most games played and became the 25th blueliner to hit 700 points in fewer than 1,050 games.
His teammates also congratulated him on his achievement, which will be recognized in a pregame ceremony when the Capitals face off against Utah Hockey Club on Feb. 9.
Dylan Strome also gets a point against the Sabres
Despite Carlson’s heroics, the Capitals went down 3-4 in a shootout on Monday night. Strome also recorded an assist during the game, feeding Jakob Chychrun during a power play in the first period. The Sabres scored twice in the second period to take a 3-1 lead before the Capitals scored again to make it 3-2.
Carlson set up Aliaksei Protas for the tying goal with 4:13 left in normal time before the Sabres won the shootout.
“We didn’t handle the puck as well as we are accustomed to,” Carlson said via NHL.com. “When we got the puck we were just a little bit off.”
The Washington Capitals are next in action against the Vancouver Canucks on Tuesday.
