The Edmonton Oilers made one first-round pick in the 2024 NHL draft after falling to the Florida Panthers in the Stanley Cup Final. After nearly becoming just the fifth team in NHL history to come back from down 3-0, the team shifted their focus to the offseason. They will look to bolster their roster for another Stanley Cup run.

This year, the Edmonton Oilers made one pick in the first draft round, selecting winger Sam O'Reilly. In addition, the team will have six more picks throughout the remainder of the draft, which is already underway from the Sphere in Las Vegas.

Before the draft, the Oilers didn't have a single first-round pick, however, a deal with the Philadelphia Flyers saw them trade a 2025 or 2026 protected first-round pick to Philly in exchange for the last pick of the first round. With it, the team selected O'Reilly, Ontario Hockey League's London Knights' winger.

Over 68 games played for the esteemed hockey program last season, O'Reilly recorded 56 points during the regular season. He added another 12 during the team's 16-game OHL Championship run.

Speaking with NHL insider Elliotte Friedman, Jeff Jackson, the CEO of Hockey Operations for the Edmonton Oilers, said:

“Our staff had him rated quite a bit higher than where he went. So Rick felt very strongly we were getting a player that would fit our mould."

Looking at the Edmonton Oilers' remaining picks in the 2024 NHL Draft

After making the 32nd pick of the 2024 NHL Draft on Friday, the team will have six more picks to make on Saturday. With second-round action already underway, it won't be long before the Edmonton Oilers are again on the clock.

Below, you can see a full list of the remaining picks the Edmonton Oilers have throughout the rest of the draft:

  • 2nd round, Pick #32 (64 Overall)
  • 5th round, Pick #31 (160 Overall)
  • 6th round, Pick #22 (183 Overall)
  • 6th round, Pick #31 (192 Overall)
  • 7th round, Pick #3 (196 Overall)
  • 7th round, Pick #25 (218 Overall)

As we get into the later rounds of the draft, it will be interesting to see what route the Edmonton Oilers look to go. In the past, they've correctly identified NCAA players using their picks. As Day 2 action continues on Saturday, many expect Edmonton to follow a similar path.

Most notably, the team is expected to draft young defencemen to improve their pace and transition play. In addition, we could see the team look to make some trades as they look to build momentum this season.

After a deep postseason run that saw them make it to the Stanley Cup Final, the team will look to remain competitive in pursuit of their sixth Stanley Cup win.
