On Friday's episode of 32 Thoughts, Elliotte Friedman discussed Jake Oettinger's new contract with the Dallas Stars. He compared it to Jeremy Swayman’s deal with the Boston Bruins, saying Oettinger could have asked for more money based on his experience.

"Oettinger is approaching 200 (games) and Swayman's is about 135 so that one more season, which would have been part of Oettinger deal." Friedman said. "You could have argued that he could have had a higher number than Swayman. But first of all, Oettinger is happy, don't screw with happy. Great life advice. Don't screw around with happy."

The Stars confirmed Oettinger’s eight-year, $66 million extension, starting in the 2025-26 season. The deal pays him an average of $8.25 million a year and runs through 2032-33.

"And secondly, Texas has no tax state. He could look at it and say, 'You know what? Even though the numbers are the same, my take home is a little bit better.' I don't think it was really tough to for Oettinger to say yes to this."

Oettinger has 116 regular-season wins, a .914 save percentage and 11 shutouts. He has also helped the Stars reach the playoffs for three straight seasons and the Western Conference Final in 2023 and 2024.

GM Jim Nill has seen Stanley Cup dreams with Jake Oettinger in goal

Stars general manager Jim Nill called Jake Oettinger one of the best goalies in the NHL.

"His unique blend of poise, size, athleticism, and mental toughness has helped our team reach new heights since he’s taken over the net," Nill said per NHL.com. "He is an integral part of our core that will allow us to contend for the Stanley Cup this season, but also for many years to come."

Nill also mentioned Oettinger's leadership in community efforts, expressing happiness that Jake and his wife Kennedi will be part of the team for years.

This season, Jake Oettinger has a 3-0-0 record with a .948 save percentage, 1.63 goals-against average and one shutout. Oettinger has saved 4.6 goals above expected, tying him with Connor Hellebuyck for third in the NHL.
