Goaltender James Reimer of the San Jose Sharks sparked new controversy when he chose not to wear the pride jersey in support of the LGBTQIA+ community during the warmup for a game against the New York Islanders on Saturday, March 18.

However, the decision did not appear to be well received by fans, as James Reimer was heavily criticized. Elliotte Friedman of 32 Thoughts recently discussed Reimer's controversial decision and shared his thoughts on the subject in a podcast.

According to Elliotte Friedman:

"As I said when it happened earlier in Philadelphia, my choice would be to wear the jersey. I recognise not everybody feels the same way but I make my choices and my choice would be to wear it. I’ve said this many times and I would like to reiterate it."

He continued by stating that the San Jose Sharks had announced earlier that James Reimer would not be wearing the jersey:

"I felt strongly about two things. Number one, the fact that the Sharks, Reimer and everybody involved announced this early."

He further added:

"You have to be honest. You have to be upfront. Everybody knew where they stood well before the warmup. I think that’s very important. You have to be honest with your customers, especially in situations like this."

Elliott Friedman then went on to say that 95 percent players of the Philadelphia Flyers and the San Jose Sharks wore the jerseys without question, and that when such a large group of people agree on something, it's a win-win situation for everyone. He said:

"95 percent of the players in Philadelphia and San Jose wore those jerseys and that's a win. In the world now, when do we get 95 percent of the people to agree on anything? That’s a win."

The decision of James Reimer to not wear the pride jersey raised many questions

James Reimer's decision not to wear the pride jersey has raised questions about the extent to which personal beliefs should be allowed to impact one's actions in a team-oriented setting.

The San Jose Sharks' decision to wear the pride jersey was part of the NHL's Hockey for Everyone initiative, which aims to promote diversity and inclusion in hockey. Ultimately, this situation highlights the complex and nuanced issues surrounding personal beliefs, individual rights, and team unity.

As the NHL and other sports organizations continue to promote diversity and inclusion, it is important to have open and respectful discussions about these issues to find ways to create an environment that welcomes all players and fans, regardless of their backgrounds or beliefs.

James Reimer informed his coach and teammates a few days earlier that he would not be wearing the pride jersey, citing his personal beliefs as the reason.
