The New York Rangers have locked their star goaltender Igor Shesterkin to a massive 8-year, $92 million contract extension. While the deal is confirmed, several key details have been speculated on by hockey insider Elliotte Friedman.
According to Friedman, Shesterkin's contract includes a full no-movement clause for the entirety of the deal. This gives the netminder complete control over where he plays for the next eight seasons. The contract also has a massive $85 million in signing bonuses.
"Some details we're hearing: $85M in signing bonuses Full NMC all the way through," Friedman tweeted. "According to a couple other teams, he actually left money on the table -- but NYR really wanted to get this done, and Shesterkin ultimately wanted to stay."
The $11.5 million AAV makes Shesterkin the highest-paid goalie in NHL history on a per-year basis. It surpasses Carey Price's previous record of $10.5 million.
However, Friedman notes that Shesterkin left money on the table and took less than he could have gotten on the open market. Shesterkin and the Rangers were eager to get an extension done, and remaining in New York was the goalie's priority.
As per the Athletic’s Arthur Staple, Shesterkin will earn $54 million in the first four years, including a massive $30 million in the first two seasons.
The Rangers were able to fit Shesterkin's huge deal under the salary cap thanks to trading defenseman Jacob Trouba's $8 million cap hit.
New York Rangers GM Chris Drury on Igor Shesterkin's contract extension
New York Rangers general manager Chris Drury expressed excitement about signing franchise goaltender Igor Shesterkin.
“Well, clearly with the contract we just signed him to,it speaks volumes of what I think of him as a goalie, as a player, as a person." Drury said.“We’re lucky to have him. We’re excited that he wanted to make the commitment to be with the Rangers for eight years. We’re excited to be able to sign him up for that."
Drury made it clear the Rangers had no intention of letting Igor Shesterkin test unrestricted free agency this summer. He echoed the sentiments of many players by saying that Shesterkin is consistently one of the team's best players and expressed his thrill that Shesterkin is their goalie.
