During the preseason, NHL players are at risk of injury, and Patrik Laine and David Reinbacher know this well. Now, Macklin Celebrini of the San Jose Sharks knows it, too. Celebrini was the top overall selection in the last NHL Draft, and now he's in jeopardy of missing a substantial amount of time.
Celebrini lost his balance after a shot and slid right into the boards. He was helped to the locker room and did not return to the game with what the Sharks called a lower-body injury.
This prompted a lot of reactions from NHL fans. They've seen players like Laine, Reinbacher, and now Celebrini have their seasons put at risk for a game that ultimately doesn't mean anything beyond preparation.
"Has there ever been this many injuries in preseason before, seems like a new one every night… brutal," one said.
"Yeah I think it’s time to shorten preseason," another added.
"We gotta make preseason 3 games tops way too many injuries in meaningless games," one said.
"This whole preseason has been filled with injuries, wtf is going on?" one asked.
Fans have seen a rash of high-profile injuries, and they are nearly unified in the belief that the NHL preseason should be shortened to prevent more issues like what has plagued Celebrini, Laine, and Reinbacher.
Canadiens to be without Patrik Laine for three months
After a crushing injury during the preseason, Patrik Laine's season is in flux. He is expected to miss up to three months with what has been diagnosed as a sprained left knee. That is ultimately a favorable diagnosis considering what it could have been.
The Montreal Canadiens star clashed knees with Toronto Maple Leafs forward Cedric Pare, causing Laine's knee to bend backward during the collision and he immediately fell to the ice.
Pare was not given a penalty for this, but he did receive quite a few punishing blows from Laine's teammate Arber Xhekaj, who was fined and penalized for his actions.
Laine was just acquired from the Columbus Blue Jackets in a trade over the summer, but his first season in Montreal is off to a rough start already and won't technically begin for a long time.
