NHL analyst Jeff Marek's departure from Sportsnet news is circulating around the internet. Rachel Doerrie, an ESPN analyst, reacted to The Athletic's article about Marek. She criticized the firing of the NHL insider on X (formerly Twitter).

"So…Jeff Marek got fired for doing the thing that Woj, Shams, and Schefter do every year?" Doerrie wrote

The article states that Sportsnet parted ways with Marek in July. The insider was questioned by the Nevada Gaming Control Board (NGCB) and NHL security. He was accused of leaking draft picks before they were officially announced. Both Sportsnet and Marek remained silent on the issue.

The news surprised many, given Marek's reputation. At the 2024 NHL Draft, Marek was praised for comforting Montreal Canadiens draft pick Michael Hage. Marek showed compassion when Hage spoke about his late father.

Marek joined Sportsnet in July 2011 and became a prominent figure in sports media. He hosted "The Jeff Marek Show" and co-hosted the popular "32 Thoughts" podcast with Elliotte Friedman. His departure ended his 13-year tenure with Sportsnet.

Marek's absence from his radio show and social media after the draft went largely unnoticed. Weeks later, fans began to speculate about his sudden silence.

The situation became more serious when it was revealed that Marek allegedly informed a friend about draft picks before their announcement. This led to an investigation by the NGCB and scrutiny from the NHL.

The Nevada Gaming Control Board did not confirm or deny any investigation. The NHL and Sportsnet did not give any details about Marek’s departure. Marek also did not comment when asked.

Jeff Marek thanked fans after leaving Sportsnet

On July 27, 2024, Jeff Marek posted on X (formerly Twitter) for the first time since late June, announcing he had left Sportsnet. Speculation started after sports media analyst Jonah Sigel reported the split. Following Sigel’s report, Sportsnet confirmed through Daily Hive that Marek was no longer with the network.

Addressing the rumors, Marek thanked his followers for their support:

“Firstly, thanks for the outpouring of kind words on Twitter/X,” Marek tweeted. “It really means the world to me.
“After 13 great years at Sportsnet, I’m moving on. It’s been an incredible journey and I’m thankful to have worked alongside so many great people and played a role in bringing sports and hockey news to fans across Canada and the world. More to come soon. Jeff,” Marek shared on X.

Many in the hockey community were left saddened by Marek’s departure.
