Former NHL player Mike Commodore recently took to Twitter to express awe at the incredible accomplishment of Cuban wrestler Mijain Lopez, who just won his fifth consecutive Olympic gold medal in Greco-Roman wrestling.
Lopez clinched the gold medal in the 130 kg weight category at the 2024 Paris Olympics. This victory cements Lopez's position as a five-time champion having previously secured gold in 2008, 2012, 2016 and 2020. He stands out as the one wrestler to achieve five Olympic golds.
Commodore, who played for over a decade in the NHL and won a Stanley Cup with Carolina in 2006, tweeted:
"I mean...look at this ***ing guy...130Kg...5 straight Olympic Greco-Roman gold medals...you would not want to run into this Big Cuban in a back alley!"
Mike also tweeted another tweet,
"Folks…I don’t know a thing about wrestling of any kind..never heard of this guy until I happened to watch the replay of his gold medal match 10 mins ago…5 straight golds for this Big Cuban. Turns 42 years old in 2 weeks. Wow."
At 41 years old, the 6-foot-5, 290 lb Lopez displayed his trademark power and technique in defeating Chile's Yasmani Acosta 6-0 on points in the gold medal match. After his dominant victory, Lopez removed his shoes and left them on the mat in a symbolic retirement from the Olympic competition.
