Connor Bedard’s struggles with the Chicago Blackhawks have raised concerns among NHL analysts about his development and the team’s future. The Athletic's James Mirtle shared his thoughts with Sean Gentille during Wednesday's edition of the "Hockey Show." They were discussing which team is likely going to finish last this season: the Blackhawks, San Jose Sharks, Anaheim Ducks, Seattle Kraken, Montreal Canadiens or Columbus Blue Jackets.
Mirtle noted that while it’s common for top draft picks to endure tough seasons, Bedard’s situation feels particularly difficult.
"The only good news is this will help Chicago get someone else in to play with Connor Bedard," Mirtle said. "Starting to feel sorry for him this season. Although it’s long been a No. 1 pick rite of passage to Andy Dufresne through some ugly seasons before experiencing any success."
This season, Bedard has shown his skill despite the challenges. Against Columbus on Dec. 2, he scored a goal and added an assist in a 6-3 loss. Over 28 games, Bedard has five goals, 16 assists and 21 points, with a -12 plus/minus rating.
Since being drafted first overall in 2023, Bedard has become a key player for Chicago. He has 27 goals and 52 assists in 96 career games. However, he also missed NHL games last season due to a broken jaw.
The Blackhawks are in a rebuilding phase and Bedard has been carrying much of the team’s offensive load. Analysts believe that while this season is tough, the Blackhawks may eventually improve by adding stronger players through drafts or trades. For Bedard to reach his full potential, Chicago will need to build a better team around him.

He received a pass from Taylor Hall and shot past Igor Shesterkin. The Rangers tied it 1-1 with 43 seconds left in the first period as Will Cuylle scored a short-handed goal by putting away a rebound.
In the second period, Taylor Hall scored the winning goal at 6:16. He finished a 2-on-1 play with Connor Bedard. Blackhawks goalie Arvid Soderblom made 29 saves, including a key stop on Chris Kreider in the final seconds. This marked the first win for interim coach Anders Sorensen. The Blackhawks will next play the Islanders and Devils as they aim to build on the momentum.
