The New York Rangers were on the wrong end of a 5-0 walloping at the hands of a division rival, the New Jersey Devils, on Monday afternoon at Prudential Center.
Jack Hughes scored twice as Jacob Markstrom made 12 saves to earn the shutout victory. As soon as the final horn sounded, fans vented their frustration on social media regarding the lopsided outcome.
“Fire Drury. Fire Laviolette. Break up this lost cause of a core. It's over,” one fan opined.
“You guys RUINED CHRISTMAS,” another fan chimed in.
“Absolutely embarrassing,” this fan weighed in.
Meanwhile, other fans tried to lighten the mood amid a somber loss by naming Jack Hughes as responsible for the Rangers' woes.
“Just named Jack Hughes the new owner of the New York Rangers,” one fan commented.
“Rangers fans paid to watch Jack Hughes win,” this fan wrote.
“Jack Hughes stays owning U,” a fan remarked.
With the Blue Shirts now 3-7-0 in their last 10 games and quickly falling in the standings, panic is beginning to set in among fans and the organization. It remains to be seen what Rangers' management does to turn the ship around before it's too late.
NY Rangers failed to get much going against Devils
The numbers paint a bleak picture for the NY Rangers. The Blue Shirts managed just 12 shots on goal the entire game. In particular, the Devils outshot New York 11-3 in the third period.
But it wasn't just the shot count that surprised fans. The Blue Shirts went 0-for-4 with the man advantage while the Devils scored three times on the power play. All told, the Devils went 3-for-4 with the man advantage. Jack Hughes, Timo Meier and Dawson Mercer made New York pay.
While the Blue Shirts played a much more physical game than the Devils, outhitting them 26-16, it wasn't enough to stop the bleeding. The Devils ran away with the game, using a combination of speed and quick transitions to convert high-danger scoring chances.
Overall, New York did not pass the eye test on Monday afternoon. The New York squad seemed to lack the desire to win the game, essentially looking to run out the clock.
With New York's top players absent from the scoresheet, coach Peter Laviolette may need to shake up lines to get something going.
However, the club will have a few days to ponder their next steps as they head into the Christmas break. The Blue Shirts will return on the ice on Saturday when they take on the Tampa Bay Lightning at Amalie Arena.
