A tweet about Jewish players in hockey started a discussion among fans on Thursday. The tweet said Jewish people are 2.4% of the U.S. population but make up 17.4% of Team USA’s roster at the NHL 4 Nations Face-Off.
The fan mentioned the percentage of Jewish players in Team USA’s 4 Nations Face-Off roster. Out of 23 players, 4 are Jewish: Jack Hughes, Quinn Hughes, Jeremy Swayman, and Adam Fox. This makes up about 17.4% of the roster, claimed by the fan in the tweet. The fan tweeted on X, saying:
"2.4% of the population of the USA is Jewish. 17.4% of Team USA in the 4 Nations Face-off is Jewish. Move over baseball. Hockey is the Jewish sport."
Fans quickly shared their thoughts online.
“It’s an expensive sport that doesn’t require monster-sized guys to play. It fits perfectly into their smaller size and higher financial success,” one fan said.
Playing hockey requires expensive equipment and ice time, which may make it more accessible to wealthier families.
“Canada has great jewish players also. Not on Team Canada but still. Zach hyman, Devon Lewi, Josh Ho-Sang, Jason Demers, etc." one fan said.
"Literally none of those guys are fully Jewish" another said.
Here are some more reactions from fans on X:
"Don't forget that we've also now got .0012% of college football quarterbacks in the bag 😂" a fan said.
"Saying a rich kids' sport is a Jewish sports is exactly why Jews need marketing help." a fan mentioned.
Not everyone liked the comparison. Some felt it could divide fans instead of bringing them together.
"Stop making everything about race" one fan strongly responded to intention behind the tweet.
