Patrick Kane and Jonathan Quick were moved in a two massive same-day deals

Fans of the NHL witnessed the end of the championship eras for two teams following the same-day deals of Patrick Kane and Jonathan Quick. The trades marked the end of two iconic careers for two of the most successful teams of the 2010s.

Oddly enough, the Los Angeles Kings and Chicago Blackhawks decided to move on from two of their championship core members on the same. Kane and Quick were teammates on the United States Olympic team which won the silver medal in 2010. They will now forever be linked with same-day deals from their former clubs.

While the same-day deal of both legends was merely coincidental, this is not the first time that two blockbuster deals have taken place on the same day. Here is a look back at some of the biggest same-deals in recent years.

June 29, 2016: Taylor Hall for Adam Larsson + P.K. Subban for Shea Weber in two shocking same-day deals

In 2016, two Canadian teams decided to change up their core rosters by moving two of their most popular players at the time. In the first deal, the Edmonton Oilers traded former first-overall draft pick Taylor Hall to the New Jersey Devils in exchange for defenseman Adam Larsson.

The move was expected to help the Oilers address their defensive woes, while the Devils would receive a boost on offense. At the time, fans felt the Devils stole Taylor Hall from Edmonton, which turned out to be a win for New Jersey. The Oilers' defense remains a weak point to this day, and Taylor Hall went on to win the MVP with the Devils.

"Seven years ago, Taylor Hall had no security and no protection. Being dealt from Edmonton was a shock. His self-esteem took the biggest wallop of his career. Hall felt ashamed. “I was so mentally f—ed." Now, he can look back with perspective." - The Athletic NHL

On the same day, the Montreal Canadiens shipped fan-favorite P.K. Subban to the Nashville Predators in exchange for Shea Weber. NHL fans were treated to another shocking same-day deal as both defensemen were in their primes.

Unlike like the Taylor Hall deal, the trade turned out to be a win-win for both clubs. Both Subban and Weber helped lead their new clubs to the Stanley Cup Finals, and while both teams ultimately lost, a finals appearance is nothing to scoff at.

February 25, 2018, Rick Nash to the Boston Bruins + Paul Stastny to the Winnipeg Jets

Rick Nash and Paul Stastny were both part of same-day deals in 2018, as both players were pending free agents and their former teams were looking to get something instead of losing them for nothing.

The first trade saw the New York Rangers trade veteran goal-scorer Rick Nash to the Boston Bruins for Ryan Spooner, Matt Beleskey, prospect Ryan Lindgren, a 2018 first-round pick, and a 2019 seventh-round pick. At the time, it was a decent return for the Rangers, as Nash was likely to move on in free agency.

Unfortunately, for the Bruins, the trade did not work out for them as Nash suffered a concussion against the Tampa Bay Lightning. After only 23 games with the club, Nash never recovered from the injury, eventually forcing him to retire in 2019 after a successful NHL career.

"Rick Nash will retire at the age of 34 due to lingering concussion issues. Nash played parts of 15 NHL seasons with the Columbus Blue Jackets, New York Rangers and Boston Bruins, recording 437 goals and 368 assists in 1060 games." - Complete Hockey News

Similar to Rick Nash, Paul Stastny was a pending unrestricted free agent at the time of his trade from the St. Louis Blues to the Winnipeg Jets. Stastny was traded to the Winnipeg Jets in exchange for Erik Foley, a conditional first-round pick in 2018, and a conditional fourth-round pick in 2020.

While Stastny helped the Jets reach the conference finals, he elected to sign with the Vegas Golden Knights in free agency. The Nash-Stastny same-day deals may have had mixed results, but they helped change the future for each franchise.
