GM Stan Bowman makes feelings known about injured $20,500,000 Oilers forward's contract impacting salary cap ahead of trade deadline

Edmonton Oilers general manager Stan Bowman acknowledged on Wednesday that Evander Kane's injury will impact the team's plans ahead of the trade deadline. Kane underwent multiple complex surgeries on September 20, including repairs to both abductors, two hernias, and two abdominal tears, which had been troubling him since last season.

Kane's recovery was estimated to take four to five months with a potential return date of February 20. However, his progress remains uncertain. In response to Sportsnet's inquiry about Kane's status, Bowman replied:

“I don't have any new update right now. Evander has been doing his rehab, but as far as his timeline and all that, I don't have anything new to share.”

With the trade deadline looming on March 7 and Kane's return date unknown, the Oilers can explore using his $5,125,000 cap space to make trades. Bowman acknowledged the need for clarity on Kane's status, saying:

“Very true. We’ll need clarity on that for sure when he's available and all that stuff. It can impact how much cap space we have. They do go hand in hand and we should be getting an update very soon.”

If Evander Kane is unable to start skating until March, it's unlikely he'll return before the regular season ends on April 16. Meanwhile, the Oilers, who have won their last four games and sit second in the Pacific division, are looking to address their blueline needs and explore the trade market for defensive reinforcements.
