Fans reacted as the New York Rangers assigned forward Matt Rempe to the AHL's Hartford Wolf Pack.
Rempe's demotion comes after a quiet start to the 2024-25 campaign, appearing in two games without registering a point. It marks a stark contrast to his attention-grabbing 2023-24 season, where he racked up 71 penalty minutes in 17 games and became known for his willingness to drop the gloves.
The demotion elicited strong reactions from Rangers fans on social media. Many were happy to see Rempe sent down, with one tweeting:
"Good riddance," in reaction to the news.
Another called Rempe:
"Why do people talk about him?? He’s just a worse Reaves," referring to the Maple Leafs’ enforcer Ryan Reaves.
Here are some more fan reactions:
"Rangers: play a game with zero emotion and get blown out of the building. Also Rangers: send the only player on the team with any fucking heart to the minors. Typical Rangers," one fan wrote on X.
"Yay, he can return to being a minor league goon," another fan wrote.
"Absolutely the right move. He’s fun and a good kid but not NHL caliber," a user commented.
"Noooooo keep him up! He’s gotten head beat in more times than not, and a huge liability on the ice, and that’s good for all teams playing the Rags," another user wrote.
The Rangers picked Rempe in the sixth round of the 2020 NHL Draft. During the 2023–24 season in the AHL, he scored eight goals and provided four assists, racking up 96 penalty minutes in 43 games.
Insider on Matt Rempe's return expectation
TSN Hockey Insider Chris Johnston provided an update on New York Rangers defenseman Matt Rempe’s return.
Johnston notes that the expectation is for Rempe to eventually make his way back to the NHL after getting some more playing time in the AHL.
"The #NYR have assigned Matt Rempe to AHL Hartford, where it's hoped he can benefit from more playing time. Expectation is he'll make his way back to the NHL down the road," he tweeted.
The Rangers hope that the additional ice time in Hartford will allow Rempe to continue developing his skills. If he can put it all together, the expectation is that Rempe will eventually get another chance to play in the NHL for the Rangers.
