Edmonton Oilers superstar Connor McDavid left Monday's game against the Columbus Blue Jackets with a reported lower-body injury after crashing into the boards in the first period.

The incident occurred when McDavid was seemingly tripped by Ivan Provorov near the boards. He briefly returned to the Oilers bench but did not return to the game.

The team later announced he would not return due to the lower-body injury. Fans reacted to the news of the NHL's leading scorer missing time.

The Oilers went on to lose 6-1 against the Blue Jackets.

Oilers HC Kris Knoblauch on Connor McDavid's injury

After the game, Oilers head coach Kris Knoblauch provided a brief update, saying McDavid would return to Edmonton to be evaluated and that he would have more information on Tuesday.

"Just he's going to go back to Edmonton, and he's going to get evaluated. I'll have something tomorrow," Knoblauch said.

TSN reporter Ryan Rishaug added that early indications were that the injury was "nothing too serious" for McDavid.

The Oilers next face the Nashville Predators on the road on Thursday. All eyes will be on the injury report leading up to that game to see if McDavid can suit up or if he will miss time.
