David Carle made history when Team USA claimed the 2025 IIHF World Junior Championships title on Sunday, becoming the first coach to win the title two years in a row. Naturally, NHL teams have come knocking at his doorstep following his success, not only with the young American team but also for his work at the University of Denver.
Carle has been the head coach of the Denver Pioneer's men's hockey team since the 2018-19 season. Over the last three seasons, the team has won the NCAA Division I champions twice, with a chance to secure a third title in 2025.
In Tuesday's appearance on ESPN's "The Point," hosted by John Buccigross and featuring Ryan Callahan, Carle addressed the ongoing interest from NHL teams. He said that he is not currently looking for an NHL job. For him, the priority is to win more titles at Denver. He also put his family's considerations forward, saying that he is set to be a father for a third time in March, making it unlikely for him to switch jobs at this time.
"Yeah. I mean, I've had this question get brought up a lot here recently, and obviously winning is only going to add to the conversation around it," David Carle said. "But this really hasn't changed. I have a young family here, we're expecting a third child in March. I've got a great situation here at Denver, where we have the resources and the tools and people to win year in and year out. That's a really rewarding experience.
"If it were to leave, as we've told recruits and anyone who asked if we need to be able a really special opportunity, the right team, city, GM, opportunity to win, a vision to win, and then making it worth my while and my family's while to be a life changing opportunity. So all those things still remain the same. And I'm not out there searching for it," Carle said. [4:40]
David Carle hints at his future with Team USA at 2026 WJC
When asked about his future plans of making it a three-peat with the young US team that will suit up for the 2026 World Junior Championships, David Carle said that it's up in the air at the moment. There have been no talks yet and also said that his family might not allow him to miss another Christmas. Carle has two sons, William and Callum with his wife Melissa.
"We'll certainly have those conversations, but nothing's been set in stone. I'm not sure my three-year-old will let me miss another Christmas, but we'll have those conversations go from there just relishing this. Really enjoying it with my family, and in our whole team," Carle added. [6:33]
David Carle has reportedly been eyed as a possible head coach for teams such as the Chicago Blackhawks and the Philadelphia Flyers. But for now, he is staying put.
