Philadelphia Flyers coach John Tortorella shared his thoughts about the struggles faced by forward Travis Konecny on the second line following the team's 3-1 loss to the New York Islanders on Friday.
Despite taking an early lead in the first period with a goal from Tyson Foerster, the Flyers were unable to convert their chances, outshooting the Islanders 30-27 but failing to score again.
Tortorella noted that Konecny's performance on the second line has not been effective, expressing uncertainty about whether he fits well with that line.
He mentioned that Konecny's points have not been consistent when playing there and indicated that adjustments to the lineup may be considered for the next game.
"I don't have a particular reason. It just hasn't worked with TK on that line. I'm just not sure if that's a match. So some of TK's points when I've had them on that line haven't really come with that line. So yeah, we'll see what the line shake out to at our next game."
Travis Konecny, who's currently inked to an eight-year, $70 million deal, leads the club with 56 points accumulated through 21 goals and 35 assists this season.
The Philadelphia Flyers currently sit sixth in the Metro Division standings with 50 points. They host the New Jersey Devils at Wells Fargo Arena next on Monday with the puck drop scheduled for 7 p.m. ET.
How the New York Islanders downed the Philadelphia Flyers
On Friday, the New York Islanders hosted the Philadelphia Flyers at UBS Arena, where the Isles secured a commanding 3-1 victory, marking their third straight win.
Tyson Foerster opened the scoring for the Islanders, giving them a 1-0 lead 14:14 into the first period. Three minutes later, Anthony Duclair tied the game 1-1 for the Flyers, which turned out to be the only goal of the game.
“It was a good team effort. We were solid 5-on-5 from the start to the end,” New York coach Patrick Roy said post-game. “Our penalty kill had a big moment as well. The power play had some good looks. It was a solid team effort.
With less than two minutes remaining in the period, Bo Horvat put the Islanders ahead 2-1. Brock Nelson's goal at 13:56 of the second period ultimately stood as the game winner for the Islanders.
Nelson and Palmieri accumulated two points apiece, and goaltender Ilya Sorokin made 29 saves between the pipes for the Isles.
