NY Rangers head coach Peter Laviolette shared his disappointment after a 3-2 overtime loss to the Colorado Avalanche. Despite playing a strong game, the Rangers couldn’t secure the extra point.
The game ended when Devon Toews scored at 4:23 of overtime with a one-timer from the right circle. The Avalanche forced overtime with 1:13 left in the third period as Artturi Lehkonen tapped in a rebound after Igor Shesterkin couldn’t hold Mikko Rantanen’s one-timer during a 6-on-5 play.
“They competed and did everything we wanted to do for 58 minutes,” Laviolette said in the post-game conference. “It’s really difficult walking away and not getting that extra point ... That's the frustrating part about it is, we play so well for the 58 and then not the capitalize. It was a hard, hard fought game for us, and didn't get the results that we wanted."
Parker Kelly and Nathan MacKinnon, who had two assists, helped lead the Avalanche. Mackenzie Blackwood made 27 saves for Colorado, improving their record to 27-17-1.
The NY Rangers, now 20-20-3, had won two straight games and picked up points in five consecutive matches (3-0-2). Sam Carrick scored a short-handed goal and added an assist while Adam Edstrom scored one goal. Rangers goalie Igor Shesterkin made 23 saves.
"The guys know how the game played out tonight," Laviolette said. "The frustrating thing is not to get the second point in the column which we need. That's why everybody's just frustrated and irritated with the night."
The Rangers will look to bounce back in their next matchup against Utah Hockey Club on Thursday.
