HC Rick Tocchet shared his thoughts after Vancouver Canucks goalie Kevin Lankinen made NHL history. Lankinen became the first goalie to win his first ten road games to start a season.
He achieved this with a 27-save overtime victory over the Detroit Red Wings. Before Lankinen's run, the record was nine straight road wins, held by Cam Talbot and Glenn Hall.
The goalie’s consistency has been key for the Canucks this season. Tocchet praised Lankinen, calling him a "road warrior."
He joked (1:38):
"He's a road warrior. You got to think he likes his hotel points."
Tocchet also said Lankinen "lives for the moment" and praised his strong effort all year.
"But no, he's been like that all year. He just lives for the moment, another good effort from tonight."
Lankinen’s win improved his record to 12-3-2. He also has both of his shutouts on the road. The win over Detroit was also special for Quinn Hughes as he became the Canucks’ all-time leader in assists by a defenceman, surpassing Alex Edler.
Lankinen now has the chance to tie the NHL record for the longest road winning streak. Evgeni Nabokov and Devan Dubnyk hold the record with 11 straight wins. Lankinen could tie it in Tuesday's game against the Minnesota Wild.
Kevin Lankinen's road wins have helped Vancouver Canucks
The Vancouver Canucks have improved their standing after their run in the last five games. They have won four out of the five games and are now 3rd in the Pacific Division with 29 points.
Their Sunday's win against Detroit Red Wings at Little Caesars Arena with Kevin Lankinen in net helped the team surge from fourth to third place. The Division is led by the Vegas Golden Knights with 33 points, followed by the Los Angeles Kings with 31 points in second.
Vancouver is looking great on the defensive front with their star defenseman Quinn Hughes leading the way as their captain. He is the team's leading points scorer with 28 points including 23 assists.
They know how to pierce their opponent's defense with Jake DeBrusk leading with 10 goals. They are able to score irrespective of how good their opponents are guarding the net.
Talking about DeBrusk following their recent win over Red Wings, Canucks coach Rick Tocchet said:
“That’s why we went out and got him. What a night, and a heck of a goal to end it.”
Kevin Lankinen and Canucks will play Minnesota Wild on Tuesday at 5:00 PM PST at Xcel Energy Center. It will be interesting to see if Lankinen secures another road win.
