Detroit Red Wings coach Todd McLellan didn't hold back when reviewing defenseman Justin Holl's performance in Tuesday's 6-3 loss to the San Jose Sharks.
Holl had a rough night, with a defensive zone turnover that led to Jan Ruuta's opening goal just 1:45 into the first period. Things didn't get better for him as another giveaway in the third period set up Tyler Toffoli's goal, putting the Sharks ahead 5-3 with less than 11 minutes remaining.
Justin Holl, who's currently inked to a three-year, $10.2 million contract with the Red Wings, did not see any ice time after that.
When asked if sitting the defenseman was meant to send a message, McLellan made it clear that Hall knew how he was performing on the ice.
"Sending a message? He sent himself a message. And I think that's pretty obvious. You can march him in here, and I'm not going to sit up here and BS, for me he had a terrible night, and that's just the way it is. So whether he got on in the last five minutes or not, it really doesn't matter," McLellan said postgame.
"He knows he can play better. I'm telling you before I'm going to tell him, but I am going to tell him that tomorrow, and that's up to him to fix. I know he's a better player than that," he added.
(from 8:39 mark onwards)
The loss to the Sharks ended Detroit's impressive seven-game winning streak. The 11-time Stanley Cup champions currently hold a 20-19-4 record, totaling 44 points. The Red Wings are currently four points behind the second East wild card position.
