On Thursday, the NHLPA filed a grievance with the Philadelphia Flyers on behalf of Ryan Johansen's termination earlier this summer. In August, the Philadelphia Flyers decided to place forward Ryan Johansen on unconditional waivers.

While details surrounding the situation were initially scarce, the Flyers indicated in a statement that they placed Johansen on unconditional waivers with the goal of terminating his contract.

Although details weren't provided by the organization, the statement notably said that the Flyers were doing so because of a "material breach" of contract. Johansen's agent, Kurt Overhardt then fired back, alleging that his client had a serious injury that required surgery.

In addition, the statement from Johansen's agent indicated that the 2015 All-Star had worked in good faith with the Flyers and the team's medical staff, keeping the team updated on the injury.

At the time when Ryan Johansen's agent released a statement, he also revealed that he had been in contact with the NHLPA. Now, just over a month later, the NHLPA filed a grievance against the Flyers over Ryan Johansen's contract termination.

The NHL community was quick to react to the situation:

"We do not care. He is not winning this," one fan wrote.
"The NHLPA has never been about player accountability, so this fits," another fan added.
"For what??? How about you show the video of Ryan at a wedding dancing and holding his wife off the ground of a dance floor. Show the evidence that people saw of ryan not being hurt at all you while on a dance floor," another fan added.

Others questioned the legitimacy of Ryan Johansen's injury:

"He's been faking an injury to not play for Torts. Screw him," a fan said.
"Because of his magical injury?" another added.
"Lmao. With his magical fake injury," one fan added.

Looking closer at the Philadelphia Flyers' decision to waive Ryan Johansen

Since trading for Ryan Johansen last season, the Philadelphia Flyers have been uncertain about his playing status. Prior to the March 6 trade that landed him in Philadelphia, he reportedly participated in the Avalanche's morning skatearound.

Then, as part of the accompanying medical exam, it was discovered that Ryan Johansen had a pre-existing injury. As a result, he didn't make a single appearance for the Flyers or their AHL affiliates, the Lehigh Valley Phantoms.

In April, Flyers GM Danny Briere opened up on the situation, explaining to Philly Hockey Now:

"All I can tell you is I don't expect him to be back. I don't know, exactly, the situation. We're dealing on the medical side with him. The thing for him is getting him back to be able to play at this time. He doesn't think he can play hockey.
"I wish I had a better answer for you. We need to get him better to figure out if there's even a remote chance of him dressing for the organization."

Then, this summer, prior to the team waiving Johansen, a video surfaced of the NHL vet dancing at his wedding, which left fans wondering about the extent of the injury.

As Elliotte Friedman theorized at the time, the Flyers likely wouldn't have made the decision to place Johansen on unconditional waivers unless they had cause. With the NHLPA filing a grievance, it will be interesting to see how things play out.
