The trial for the five players from the Hockey Canada scandal who were a part of Canada's world junior hockey team will begin on April 22, 2025. All five were charged with sexual assault.
The Superior Court jury trial will be held in London, Ontario, and is expected to take up to eight weeks following the selection of the jurors. Judge Bruce Thomas has presided over most of the pre-trial hearings for the case.
He set the trial's next date in a virtual meeting with the Crown and defense attorneys. There was a September alternative, but the judge rejected that.
Former NHL players Dillon Dube, Cal Foote, Carter Hart, and Alex Formenton were all charged with a single count of sexual assault. Michael McLeod got two counts, including one for helping someone else in their assault.
A report from May 2022 revealed that the Hockey Canada scandal had been settled with a civil lawsuit. A woman alleged she was sexually assaulted by eight men, including players from the 2018 junior team. The alleged incident occurred after an event celebrating that team's success.
All NHL players involved in Hockey Canada scandal didn't get new contracts
In February, following the allegations, all four players accused who were still on NHL teams took a leave of absence. When free agency hit, none of the four players on active rosters were given qualifying offers. They became free agents over the summer.
That included Philadelphia Flyers goaltender Carter Hart, New Jersey Devils stars Michael McLeod and Cal Foote, and Calgary Flames forward Dillon Dube. Two players, Foote and Dube, landed in alternative hockey leagues, but the other two remain free agents.
According to the lawsuit's documents via ESPN, the woman was 20 at the time. She claimed that one of the alleged perpetrators invited seven other men into the room to perform unwanted sexual acts on her after she was invited to the hotel room.
The alleged victim also said they intimidated her and prevented her from leaving the room. The woman said in the lawsuit the men forced her to take a shower and to say on video that she was sober, thus proving that they didn't take advantage of her mental state.
